Mochi-zuki

Gala and me were invited for mochi-maing to Fujisawa by our dear Omoto-sensei.
We had no clue how interesting, exhausting, but even more how much fun the process of mochi-zuki (making rice cake) could be! It is a very traditional food, especially prepared at new year's time - and sadly by now practiced only by few Japanese.
As it turned our I must have been a mochi-master in my former life, since (I have been told) I showed mysterious mochi-zuki skills!! What an honour, arigatou!!

Mochi is made out of plain rice, slowly stomped, mashed and hammered until a thick, hot, elastic paste - called MOCHI.

In a large solid wooded bowl the poor rice is fiercely attacked by courageous men armed with a wooded hammer!!
This mochi contains red beans that add another flavour to the dough: mame-no-mochi.

The experience of a real family event and the taste of fresh mochi will remain in our memory for a very long time!
